BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
DATE: January 20, 2015
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: Jason Autrey
SUBJECT: Informational Update on Okaloosa Geocaching Trail
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
BCC DISTRICT: All
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Public Works is providing an informational update regarding the
Geocaching Trail available at County Public Parks and the recognition of Okaloosa County's 100
year anniversary.
BACKGROUND: In the fall of 2013 Public Works staff, led by Michael Anderson, activated
the Okaloosa County Geocache Trail. Geocaching is a recreational activity where people can
locate "hidden" markers in an effort to obtain a commemorative coin. The program is intended
to serve as another way for residents and visitors to explore our public parks throughout the
County.
Since starting the program there have been 4,761 "finds" of the 34 active geocache points; the
program has been active for about 450 days. The most common find point is James Lee Park
with 357 finds. In order to obtain the commemorative coin one person would have to log in to at
least 20 of the Geocache points - since the beginning of the program 150 people have completed
the quest and obtained the original silver coin.
In honor of Okaloosa County's Centennial celebration the coin for 2015 has been doubled and
includes a special inscription along the edge. People who have completed the trail by finding 20
locations can obtain the centennial coin set by completing the full tour and anyone else can begin
the Geocache tour to collect this centennial coin by finding any 20 points.
To learn more about the Geocache Trail anyone can check out the facebook page at
www.facebook.com/OkaloosaGeoTrailFL or they can call Michael Anderson of Public Works at
