SUBJECT: 2013 Emerald Coast Beach Volleyball Program

STATEMENT OF ISSUE: On January 23, 2013 the Okaloosa County TDC met and
unanimously recommended approval of a $30,000 sponsorship for three (3) 2013 beach
volleyball events at The Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island, presented by Southern Events
Management, Inc.
The 2013 program will consist of Emerald Coast Volleyball Week, April 17-21; the inaugural
Emerald Coast Volleyball Juniors Open, May 18-19; and Emerald Coast Fall Classic, October 2-
6. These events could conservatively generate more than 4,000 room nights for the taxing
district's lodging industry constituents. The TDC's recommended sponsorship requires Board
approval. The completed Sponsorship Funding Application form reviewed and considered by
the TDC is attached, as is an informational power point presentation.
BACKGROUND: On September 18, 2012 the Board approved an updated and revised version
of the Tourist Development Council's Operations & Procedures Manual, which had been
previously approved by the TDC on August 6, 2012.
Section G.600 of the Manual states, among other things, that the funding of sponsorships is
authorized "where such funding will be used to promote and attract increased tourism......" "The
Council shall provide a recommendation of proposed sponsorships to the Board, certifying that
such funding would meet the above criteria." "The Board shall have the final approval authority
of all sponsorships."
OPTIONS: Approve/Disapprove
RECOMMENDATIONS: Approve the TDC's recommendation of a $30,000.00 sponsorship
for the three (3)-event 2013 Emerald Coast Beach Volleyball program, conservatively expected
to generate in excess of 4,000 room nights.
