Eglin Air Force Base, the Air Armament Center ( AAC), is the largest Air Force Base in the
Department of Defense and is the largest economic generator in Okaloosa County. Eglin' s
land area houses Eglin AFB, Hurlburt Field and Duke Field and is referred to as the Eglin
Complex. Eglin' s ranges support training activities for numerous operational military units,
schools, and various federal agencies.
Not only does the Eglin complex contribute to the economy through its active duty, civil
service, dependents, retirees, and surviving spouses' payroll but it also draws civilian defense
contracting firms into the area; all of which contribute to Okaloosa' s spending and economic
growth. The defense contracting in Okaloosa County creates the foundation for growth and
expansion in high- technology segments of the economy. Local defense contractors have
increased hiring in response to the increased military spending since September 11, 2001.
Many are obtaining new contracts each year requiring hundreds of new employees.
Continual and expansion of military installations is critical to our
operation our
economic foundation:
Accounts for over 34% ofthe economy in Northwest Florida
Accounts for over 60% of the economy in Okaloosa County

The BRAC realignments will not only add new missions and new government personnel but
also their families. There will be a magnitude of challenges and opportunities to effectively
and efficiently engage in these realignments. To address these challenges, the EDC engaged
the University of West Florida Haas Center to conduct a post- BRAC economic impact
analysis. That report can be viewed in its entirety on the DSI webpage: www. florida-
