Viva Florida 500
1. BACKGROUND:
1. 1. Viva Florida 500 is a major statewide initiative designed to highlight Florida' s 500
years of history since the arrival of Ponce De Leon in 1513. The celebration was
created to recognize the state' s progress over the last 500 years in the areas of history,
art, and culture and is being organized by the Florida Department of State. Each of
Florida' s 67 counties is also conducting their own programs which then dovetail into
the statewide effort throughout the 2013 calendar year.
2. DISCUSSION:
2. 1. A major component of Viva Florida 500 is a time capsule representing the history, art,
and culture of each county. The Department of State' s Division of Library and
Information Sciences has sent each of the counties' main library systems a specially
designed canister that will become the county' s time capsule. The Okaloosa Time
Capsule Committee, headed up by the Okaloosa County Public Library Cooperative
and its member- libraries, has begun the effort to fill the Okaloosa County time capsule
which will be opened in 2045, the bicentennial of Florida' s statehood. Ideas from all
are welcome.
2.2. Other community groups involved so far include Chambers of Commerce, the Touist
Development Council, the Emerald Coast Conference Center, the school system, and
the museums.
2. 3. An Okaloosa Viva 500 Facebook page has been created, as well as a Pinterest page, to
try and get as much community involvement as possible.
2. 4. Any cultural events that the City participates in during 2013, such as Billy Bowlegs,
Musical Echoes, art shows, etc., might be linked to the Okaloosa Viva Florida 500
initiative. A logo is available for use in publicity and events may be registered on the
statewide website. The contact for registration of events and general information is
Kathy Newby, County Information Officer. Please visit-
