BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST DATE: November 19, 2013 TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board FROM: John Hofstad SUBJECT: Veteran's Park Improvements DEPARTMENT: Public Works BCC DISTRICT: 2 STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Staff from Public Works and the Tourist Development Department have been working on concept drawings for the development of Veteran's Park on Okaloosa Island. Two development alternatives are included herein; input and further development direction is sought from the Board of County Commissioners (no formal action is required). BACKGROUND: In 2012 the Board of County Commissioners began the process of improving the 35 acres of land on Okaloosa Island adjacent to the Convention Center. To date improvements / changes to the site include the Convention Center Exhibit Pad (under construction), additional boat trailer parking for Marler Park (under construction) and approval of leased parcels for private development. In addition to these items the Board has expressed a desire to improve the remaining acreage (approximately 15 acres) as Veteran's Park. Working with an on-board consultant, staff has developed two improvement alternative concepts for discussion and consideration. Available to each of the included alternatives is a phasing plan (also provided) that would allow for the first phase of improvements to be open to the public in the spring of 2014; intended to be in conjunction with the opening of the Exhibit Pad and Trailer Parking. In general, the difference between the two alternatives is the inclusion of a "central" park area that would include vehicular parking, restrooms, gathering areas and various commemorative appurtenances versus a larger trail system with occasional pavilions. OPTIONS: Staff requests input from the Board of County Commissioners regarding the proposed improvements to Veteran's Park. RECOMMENDATIONS: No formal action by the Board is required at this time. RECOMMENDED BY: APPROVED BY: Ernie Padgett, County Administrator
