non-staining, high-strength structural grout material.
3. The final contour of the grout shall be vertical and flush with the edge of the base
plates, and shall not overlap outside the edge of the base plates.
4. After the grout has hardened sufficiently for the application of a curing compound,
a water-based curing compound shall be applied to the exposed grout surfaces.
5. After cleaning and painting, any separation between the base plates and the grout
greater than 1/32" and less than 5/32" shall be filled with elastomeric sealant.
B. Welding Repairs
1. All welding repairs to the interior or exterior of the tank are to be made prior
to all painting operations.
2. No welding or flame cutting through the existing coating system shall be
permitted, unless adequate worker protection is provided in accordance with the
instructions in ANSI Z49.1, "Safety in Welding and Cutting."
3. Any resulting burrs, weld spatter, sharp edges, corners, or rough welds which
would cause difficulty in applying a holiday-free coating shall be ground smooth.
This grinding is considered incidental to the welding work and is to be included in
the Base Bid.
4. After grinding, these areas shall be cleaned to produce the profile recommended by
the manufacturer of the coating system.
5. Cleaning Areas To Be Welded
a. It shall be necessary to remove the coating prior to the welding of any new
items to the tank.
b. All areas that have been welded and/or ground smooth shall be cleaned prior
to painting to provide proper profile for the coating system.
c. Areas to be welded shall be welded prior to the final cleaning and painting of
surfaces within the heat-affected zone. The heat-affected zone includes the
opposite side of the plate or member being welded. Even if not specifically

mentioned as a part of the Work under this Agreement, those areas of paint or
coatings in the heat-affected zone of areas not specified to be painted shall be
cleaned and painted in accordance with the requirements listed in these
Detailed Technical Specifications.
C. Pit Filling
1. After an area of steel is abrasive blast cleaned, any pits, rough areas or seams
marked for pit filling or surfacing by the ENGINEER shall be filled with
solventless polyamide epoxy seam sealer of the type recommended by the supplier
of the interior paint system. The epoxy seam sealer shall be applied neatly and
smoothly to the steel surfaces and any rough areas of the seam sealer shall be
sanded smooth prior to the application of the coating system.
2. The CONTRACTOR shall include in his base bid two gallons of pit filler.
D. Seam/Seal Welding
1. All areas of apparent seam deterioration shall be abrasive blast cleaned, and any
seam corrosion or undercut marked by the Engineer shall be repaired by arc-
gouging and welding.
2. The number of linear feet of seam welding shall be paid for by the unit price as
listed in the Bid Proposal.
E. Handrail Addition (in base bid - both tanks)
Fabricate and install a handrail on the exterior of the access tube at the top of both
tanks as depicted in the detailed drawing in the Appendix. Depicted on side of access
tube, but final location (access tube or top of tank) to be determined by OWNER at
time of installation. An additional coat of zinc-rich primer shall be shop-applied to all
replacement parts.
G. Tank Vent (separate bid item - Bluewater Tank only)
Replace tank vent with 24" Pressure Vacuum Vent as manufactured by Newlin’s
Welding and Tank Maintenance (Montezuma, IN - Phone No. (765) 245-2741)
K. Roof Manway (separate bid item - both tanks)
Replace existing 24" roof manway with new 30" roof manway as manufactured by
Newlin’s Welding and Tank Maintenance (Montezuma, IN - Phone No. (765) 245-
