P ROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guar d was established fr om the Revenue Cutter Ser vice, along with the Life Saving Service, the Bureau of Lighthouses, and the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation on August 4, 1790, with the mission of enforcing the customs laws of the United States; and WHEREAS, the Coast Guar d in times of peace is char ged with the pr otection of life and pr oper ty at sea, along our shores, and along the navigable waters of the United States, including the Great Lakes, and in its long history has performed this duty with great success and with exceptional devotion to duty; and WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guar d Station, Destin, Flor ida was commissioned November 1977 on Choctawhatchee Bay; and WHEREAS, the missions of this Coast Guar d station include sear ch and r escue, as well as boating safety, and marine environmental protection; and WHEREAS, Thir ty-five years ago this day, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3 rd Class Lonnie Jones lost his life in a search and rescue operation for missing boaters on March 30, 1981. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Okaloosa County, Florida, that we do hereby acknowledge March 30, 2016 as the 35th Anniversary of his death and proclaim this day as a DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS LONNIE JONES in Okaloosa County and ask our citizens to keep his family and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our community in their thoughts on this day.
