Okaloosa County BOCC — September 15, 2015 — 9-15-15 World Heart Day

P ROCLAMATION WHEREAS, World Heart Day brings awareness to cardiovascular disease and that everyone has the chance to make healthy heart choices wherever they live, learn, work, or play; and WHEREAS, World Heart Day encourages us all to reduce our cardiovascular risk, and promotes a heart-healthy planet for those around us; and WHEREAS, Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and the second lead- ing cause of death in Okaloosa County; and WHEREAS, The risk factors for heart disease are smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels, overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and pre- diabetes, a family history of early heart disease, age, history of preeclampsia; and WHEREAS, Individuals can take action to protect their heart health and prevent heart disease by taking steps to prevent and control the risk factors for the disease; and WHEREAS, The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County, the Healthy Okaloosa Col- laborative, Healthiest Weight Florida Initiative, and World Heart Day are building awareness of citizens’ heart disease risk and empowering them to reduce their risk and prevent heart disease; and WHEREAS, the Healthy Okaloosa Collaborative is working to support policy and environmental change to improve healthy lifestyles and heart health through the 5-2-1-0 message. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Okaloosa County, Florida, that we do hereby proclaim our recognition that September 29, 2015 is “WORLD HEART DAY” and encourage all citizens to work together to promote and improve health and to make heart health a prior- ity for themselves and their families, become aware of their risk for heart disease, and take action to protect their heart health.
