Each surface aerator consists of one 150 HP motor, gearbox, shaft and surface impeller. These surface aerators are an extremely important part of the process, as the microorganisms require air for survival. In December 2014, one of the surface aerator gearboxes malfunctioned to the point beyond repair and now needs replacing, Only the gear box of the complete unit needs replacing. OCWS must replace the acrator gearbox with the same model, due to non-interchangeable parts. To go with a different make and model would require replacing the entire unit (motor, gearbox. shaft and impelier), which would elevate the cost to an extreme amount, In addition, the slab the aerators are mounted on would also need modifying, as each make and model require different footprints and mounting specifications.
