General Project Information
Project Title: TRAFFIC HOMICIDE EQUIPMENT ACQUISITION
Subgrant Recipient: City of Fort Walton Beach
Implementing Agency: City of Fort Walton Beach Police Department
Project Start Date: 2/ 1/ 2013 End Date: 6/ 30/ 2013
Problem Identification
The Fort Walton Beach Police Department is tasked with traffic enforcement and investigation of
vehicular accidents of those occuring within its jurisdiction. Considering the volume of normal
traffic coupled with the seasonal influx of visitors, the challenge is often demanding. Too often
traffic accidents involve serious injury or death. These incidents require specialized training and
complex equipment to properly assess physical evidence and document for prosecution. The Fort
Walton Beach Police Department maintains its own traffic homicide unit and subsequently must
supply the investigators with the needed tools to perform the function efficiently and thoroughly.
In the current economy it is difficult to fund the expense of the described equipment. The police
department also uses radar units in traffic enforcement as a preventative measure against
accidents.
Project Summary (Scope of Work)
The Fort Walton Beach Police Department intends to use the funds to procure laser mapping
equipment for the traffic homicide investigators and moving radar and handheld radars for general
use. Grant funds will be sufficient to purchase the complement of laser mapping equipment and
radar units. It is anticipated that the moving radar and hand held radar will be integrated into
patrol use where it will be of the most benefit.
