Dear County Commissioners,
The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation is presenting its 3 annual 5K road race, Race for the Arts, on
Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. The proposed run will begin and end at the Mattie
Kelly Cultural Arts Village located at 4323 Commons Drive West in Destin (near the YMCA).
We are seeking your approval to shut down westbound traffic on a 0.6 mile segment of
Commons Dr, stretching from the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village site ta the entrance of
Kelly Plantation, for a period of 90 minutes ihe morning of the event.
This entire stretch of Commons Drive is divided by a median negating the necessity to request
traffic be closed in both directions. We consulted Capt. Terry Watkins of the Sheriff's Dept.
regarding our traffic management plan. Based on his recommendations, we will have members of
the SherifP’s Posse at each major intersection and business establishment with ingress/egress onto
this section of Commons Drive. Those intersections include the entrance to Kelly Plantation,
Fresh Market, and both sides of Home Depot. Traffic volunteers will be along the race route to
assist the Sheriff's Posse.
The remaining portion of the race route will run through Kelly Plantation. We are concurrently
seeking approval from the Kelly Plantation Homeowner’s Association for use of their roads. A
map of the route, along with traffic volunteer placement (including intersections worked by the
Sheriff's Posse) is enclosed for your review,
We recognize that some businesses along this stretch of Commons Drive will be open during the
race. We will allow cars to pass through the intersections when there is no hazard to race
participants. This will allow motorist to gain access to these establishments with minimal
inconvenience, while still providing safety to our race participants.
In conclusion, we believe our traffic management plan will be effective and minimize
inconvenience to motorists the morning of the event. The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation
appreciates your time in reviewing this request. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely, Sincerely,
Eric Navarre Marcia Hull
