SECTION 11- SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

persons through the year 2017 (TIris is equivalent to an annual growth rate of 0.70 percent per year, or

persons per year). same
period, average daily
from 2, 897, 000 gpd to 3, 106, 000 gpd, or an increase of 7.2 percent.
The City of Fort Walton Beach' s drinking water system is considered to be in good to excellent
condition with very little improvement needed over the current planning horizon. System capacity
requirements are above adequate and meet the projected needs of the City through 2017 . Water storage
facilities have adequate capacity as well and meet the projected peak hour demand and fire flow
requirements as suggested by AWWA standards. Some distribution system improvements are needed and
the City is actively engaged in this effort. Each year the City replaces aging, small diameter water lines with
higher capacity lines to improve transmission and fire fighting capabilities. In addition, the City is in the
first year of a water meter replacement program to completely replace all of the water meters in its
inventory. Routine maintenance is also performed on each of the City's water wells and all are considered
to be in good to excellent working condition.
The City will continue to implement measures to promote water conservation and efficient use of
the City's potable resources. These measures include: expansion of the reclaimed water system, completion
of the joint reclaimed water system with Hurlburt Field, periodic review and renewal of the City' s water
conservation rate schedule, continued enforcement of water saving Xeriscape measures, promotion of water

conservation and efficiency measures through various media channels, and exploration of Aquifer Storage
and Recovery technology for reclaimed water disposal. Collectively, these measures should continue to
result in the beneficial reduction of withdrawals from the Floridan Aquifer over the next 10- year planning
horizon. Should water conservation efforts not prove sufficient at addressing future water needs, the City
may continue its exploration of the regional Sand and Gravel Aquifer, or seek to enter an interlocal
agreement for wholesale water purchase from Okaloosa County.
