[1870] catalogue date; later overprint undated
Chromolithographic advertising label using a raven and the refrain “Quoth the Raven: Nevermore.”
This tobacco advertising print borrows the raven and “Nevermore” refrain from Poe’s poem. The design is credited to Kaufmann & Strauss and carries an 1870 copyright. Its use in advertising shows the poem’s imagery moving beyond literary publication into commercial print.
The surviving sheet also has a later British-American Tobacco successor overprint. The 1870 catalogue date refers to the design; the date of that overprint is not established.
