Public Content
Okaloosa County School District offers a robust Career and Technical Education Program. Meigs Middle School, Shoal River Middle School and
Davidson Middle School is no exception. All three schools offer several CTE courses, however, currently they do not offer a Building Trades Program.
After looking at their current CTE courses and the success of the program at other schools in the area, all three middle schools find it necessary to
begin offering the Building Trades program at the middle school level to better provide a pathway for these students into the high school programs.
The carpentry field is both practical and money-making, with a steady growth in demand projected over the next ten years for qualified carpenters in
the local area. Students in this program start with the basics and move all the way up to cabinetry and home construction and will have the opportunity
to design and build personal projects. The Building Trades program is designed to prepare students to be employable at entry level jobs in-house and
mill carpentry. In addition to carpentry skills, students learn blueprint reading, elementary drafting and architectural design, building materials
identification and building codes. These elements will be incorporated into the Carpentry program now at a middle school level at three schools one in
Shalimar, Florida and two in Crestview, Florida.
HBI is dedicated to working with secondary educational institutions to support student access to schools-based instructional programs and skills
training in the residential building and construction trades. These important grant funds will support providing valuable training to students through
HBI’s PACT curriculum with the goal of more students learning about career pathways in residential construction and ultimately having more students
enter this industry.
If awarded the grant funding will be used toward HBI PACT licensing as follows: Licensing Cost and instructor training.
