Abstract Description: Briefly but completely describe the problem to be addressed and the project solution to
the problem. Please limit to one page.
The City of Fort Walton Beach, located in the Florida Panhandle on Santa Rosa Sound, requests financial assistance
to enhance public shoreline access by improving an underutilized waterfront area located in the heart of downtown
Fort Walton Beach. The site to be improved is located under the historic Brooks Bridge, and is publicly -owned by
the Florida Department of Transportation as a bridge right- of-way. The site is a little -known local waterfront
gathering place and provides plenty of parking, bird watching, fishing, canoe -launching and other water -related
activities.
The City of Fort Walton Beach will use FCMP funds to:
1) Provide public access to the downtown waterfront by constructing a 10 -1oot wide concrete walkway
boardwalk) through the 1/ 4- acre site and over a stream omfall. The waterfront walkway will provide a
connection from offices and retail to restaurants and residential areas.
2) Restore the natural shoreline by stabilizing the bank and planting approximately 135 linear feet of shoreline
vegetation.
3) Improve coastal access by installing various amenities, none of which currently exist, including lighting, picnic
tables, bike racks, .a designated canoe launch and birding binoculars. The existing pier will also be repaired by
replacing dilapidated boards and adding nautical rope guiders, benches, and a fish cleaning station.
4) Educate the public on the importance of protecting the coastal/ estuarine environment through signage along the
boardwalk and on the pier.
FCMP funds will be used for
