BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
DATE: June 3, 2014
TO: Honorable Chairman and Members of the Board
FROM: Paul Lawson
SUBJECT: National School Lunch Program Grant
DEPARTMENT: Corrections
BCC DISTRICT:
STATEMENT OF ISSUE: The Okaloosa County Department of Corrections requests
authorization for staff to submit on-line renewal of a grant application to receive funds from the
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' National School Lunch Program and
approve the Amendment #2 to the required Wellness Policy.
BACKGROUND: The Department of Corrections, in cooperation with Okaloosa County School
Board, provides educational opportunities for juveniles and youthful offenders in accordance
with FSS 951.176. Consequently, the Department of Corrections is eligible to participate in the
National School Lunch Program, and to receive reimbursement for expenses related to meals for
juvenile inmates who qualify for the program. This program is renewable annually and in FY13,
the Department received reimbursement in the amount of $26,667.71.
The NSLP Program requires a wellness policy for participation. The original wellness policy
was unnecessarily cumbersome and restrictive. During the site’s recent on-site review, changes
to the wellness policy were discussed with the Reviewer. The changes discussed have been
incorporated into the attached policy.
OPTIONS: Approve or Disapprove
RECOMMENDATIONS: We recommend the Board authorize the submission of the on-line
grant application renewal and future grant documents during the term of the grant by the Clerk’s
Contracts & Grants Office and the Chairman to sign the Amended Wellness Policy and any other
grant documents for the term of the grant.
