RESOLUTION NO. A RESOLUTION BY THE COUNTY COMMISSION OF OKALOOSA COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE CHANGE TO THE APPOINTMENT OF TRAUMA CENTERS WITHIN TRAUMA SERVICE AREA 1, ALLOWING FOR THE ADDITION OF A TRAUMA CENTER IN OKALOOSA COUNTY. WHEREAS, Okaloosa County has a population of more than 187,000 and, since one of every three people will be affected by trauma, this population is more than large enough to demand a trauma center; and WHEREAS, getting patients to a trauma center as quickly as possible after an injury is critical in terms of outcomes. Survival chances are greatest when trauma care is received within 60 minutes of injury and they increase by 25% when a trauma patient receives care in a trauma center; and WHEREAS, most residents of Okaloosa County are well over an hour from the nearest trauma center; and WHEREAS, the only two trauma centers in our Trauma Service Area are located within a few miles of one another in Escambia County and, therefore, there is no trauma center available in Okaloosa County; and WHEREAS, Okaloosa County is in need of a local trauma center equipped with cutting edge technology and multidisciplinary services that will help save lives; and WHEREAS, trauma is the leading cause of death among Floridians ages 1 through 44 and it accounts for more lives lost than heart disease and cancer combined; and WHEREAS, only 2 in 5 trauma patients receive care in a trauma center in Florida, but every member of our community deserves accessible and quality trauma care for life’s most critical moments; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the County Commission of Okaloosa County strongly encourages the Florida Department of Health to effect a change to the apportionment of trauma centers within TSA 1 that allows for a trauma center in Okaloosa County. DULY PASSED AND ADOPTED in regular session this 19th day of March 2013. BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OKALOOSA COUNTY, FLORIDA _________________________________ Don R. Amunds, Chairman ATTEST DON W.
