BREAK AWAY BEARING MOUNT
Your grinder is equipped with a patented safety system design called a "Break Away
Bearing Mount" to minimize any potential damage that may occur when large
contaminants or steel materials wind up in the product being ground.
When the hammermill encounters a heavy contaminant, the break away system has the
ability to relive the shock load created when the hammer tip contacts the contaminant at
the cutting edge or screen surface. This impact or shock energy happens so quickly due
to the high tip speed of the mill that it is very difficult to lessen the amount of energy
created and still have a shear point that will stand up to normal grinding demands. The
mass of the rotating hammermill obviously has a high level of stored energy, so at the
point of impact, something has to give. Once the hammer contacts the contaminant, the
downward force of energy is then re-directed in an upward and back direction. The best
possible way to relieve this force is to allow the mill to move away in that direction.
Other types of designs are less effective due to the nature of the design and their ability to
move out of the way quickly enough to relieve the energy. Typically these systems either
break away too easily and end up being welded in solid or simply don't break away at all.
Our system provides an effective weak link (relief point) to prevent damage to major
components when
contaminates are
encountered.
The breakaway function .L BEARING
is accomplished by the
way the mill bearings are
BEARING SHEAR PAD
mounted to the main
structure of the 4l
framework. Each of the I ++ Eh rt?i rfi
bearing housings are
bolted down to a FRAME
breakaway mounting BEARING LIFT BOLTS
plate by all four or the EAR BOLT
standard mounting bolts.
The four cap bolts are drilled through creating an 8-point solid mount to the block. The
block is then secured to the framework of the machine by smaller shear bolts, placed at
specific locations further away from the axis of the mill. The bolts are designed strong
enough to handle all the necessary security and integrity to grind any type of organic
material that is the intended use of the machine yet light enough to shear and break away
when heavy contaminates are encountered.
As we all know grinding isn't a perfect world and there is no such thing as a clean wood
pile. Diamond Z grinders are designed with enough mass and structural integrity to
Packet Pg. 328
process the majority of contaminates typically found in a wood pile with out any
substantial damage minimizing down time. When a larger piece of steel does make its
way between the hammer and the cutting edge, the shear bolts have the ability to shear or
break allowing the mill to move away from the impact point greatly reducing any amount
of damage that would normally occur in standard designs.
This break away design has been very effective and has been tested in our model 1600
Solid waste grinder over the last nine years. This application is by far the most
destructive as it is standard operating practice to hit large foreign objects on a consistent
basis with little or no down time.
Procedure for replacing mill after a shearing impact has occurred:
1) Position the feed roller and mill cover into the maintenance position. (Refer to
your manual and follow all lock out tag out instructions)
2) Inspect the mill area for any loose or damaged tips; wear plates, mill rods and
hammers. Replace if necessary. (Make sure after all repairs are made that your
hammer mill is in balance)
3) Inspect your bearing mount blocks to see if any shear bolts have been displaced.
If any of the shear bolts are loose remove them all and raise the mill bearings
utilizing the bearing lift bolts to insure the mounting surfaces are clean.
4) Lower bearings back down into place and inspect and re-torque all bolts making
sure to use new
