crime, low income neighborhoods. This
investment supports: enrollment process for the Little and Big, orientation processes, all the necessary
background screening of mentors, assessments, matching, case management support of the match once
it's made, volunteer recruitment, activities for matches, and whatever else is needed to help the match
succeed.
We ask for your investment to partner with us to help achieve our goal to serve more children with a gift
of $1000. Your generous support will allow us to help the lives of our community’s most vulnerable
children beat the odds.
How would the funds benefit the organization? (Please be specific)
The ultimate goal of the program is to empower youth to become productive employed community
citizens, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty and crime. These youth are exposed to many job
possibilities and given the knowledge of what opportunities await them as they grow to become
young adults. On average it costs around $60,000 + per year for a child who is committed to a
Juvenile Justice System program as compared to $1,000 per year to support a one-on-one mentoring
relationship. Mentors encourage them to complete their high school education and expose them to
cultural and career exploration opportunities.
What segment of our community would benefit from this funding?
Children and youth enter the program between the ages of six and 8” grade and can stay matched until
their 18th birthday. The total number eligible for the program is the total number of youth ages 6-8"
grade primarily from single parent families not to exclude grandparents raising their grandchildren,
military families, foster families and other special needs, no major behavioral issues can be present in
youth that a volunteer could not handle. While there is no income requirement, youth typically served
are from low income neighborhoods and high juvenile crime zip codes. Disabled youth who possess the
ability to function on a cognitive level conducive to understanding and reciprocity in a one-to-one
relationship are served through our program. Our policy is to serve youth from all ethic backgrounds.
As of this application in Okaloosa/Walton Counties we are currently supporting 47 active matches and
their are 21 children on our waiting list. Last year in 2012 we serviced 35 children through one-to-one
mentoring.
PROJECT BUDGET:
Total Project Cost: $5,000
Funds requested will be used to cover the costs of our mentoring services for 15 people or 5
matches . This projects number one focus is on education, academic achievement and the
development of youth.
