Dear Sheriff Ashley,
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr (MLK) Celebration Committee of Okaloosa County is requesting funds from the
Law Enforcernent Trust Fund (LETF) in the amount of $2,000, Your contribution last year enabled us to put on
a first class event for our community and at the same time helped provide positive and constructive activities for
our youth, Our continued mission is to support Dr. King’s ideas in the areas of education, awareness, and social
interaction. It is the continued aim of the Committee to bring the community together in a spirit of unity to
build lasting relationships. The funds will be used to help carry out a Youth Oratorical/Poster Contest, a
Memorial Service Program, Parade, Rally and After-Rally Activities. All free of charge to any participant.
The MLK. Ir. Observance committee is a sub-committee of the Ministerial Alliance. Under the auspices of the
Ministry Alliance, the program pushes to educate voung people by forming community groups of children from
ages 6 to 18 and providing them with alternatives to criminal, aon-constructive activity. As you know, our
cornmunifiés today are riddled Wilt tnhealiiy Influences.” Daily, children in the FWErarea are tempted by
bullying. drug use, theft and violence. Being involved in MLE. activities are directly related to preventing
crime, helping to establish safe neighborhoods, and increasing awareness of the perils of drug abuse.
We solicit your support through the use of the LETF and the physical appearance of you and your Deputies at
some of the events. As a supporter of the commemoration, you will be providing positive youth alternatives to
negative crime and drug activities that currently exist in some of our neighbors.
We look forward to your positive approval of this request. If you need any additional information, you may
contact me at (850) 863-4755 or via email at Wiavti@embarqmail.com or Mr. Justin Lee, (850)-883-2708.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida Narrative
What is the overall purpose of the organization?
Big Brothers Big Sisters support match relationships with children age 6 through the 18 years of age
with caring adults in the community. Children and youth primarily come from single parent homes or
homes where special circumstances come into play such as grandparents raising their grandchildren,
foster parents and military families. We call our Volunteers “Bigs” and our children “Littles”. Our focus
ison prevention and our goals and objectives include the reduction of truancy, suspensions, juvenile
delinquency, teen pregnancy, and gang participation. Further goals include academic improvement,
improved social skills, and better relationships. These goals and objectives are obtained through
individualized match plan goals. Research confirms that Big Brothers Big Sisters is successful in helping
our community’s most vulnerable children beat the odds. Our strength lies in the fact that we do what
we do extremely well. We know our program encourages values such as hard work and honesty.
Through an independent study we know that when our Littles meet regularly with their Big they are:
More confident of their performance in school
Get along better with their family
1/3 less likely to hit someone
27% less likely to begin using alcohol
52% less likely to skip school
37% less likely to skip a class
And
46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs:
A study conducted by Harris Interactive measured outcomes of children who were mentored
through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Findings indicate that our mentoring programs help break
cycles linked to poverty!
e Alumni were 75% more likely than non-alumni to have received a four-year college degree
e Alumni were 39% more likely than non-alumni to have current household incomes of $75,000
or higher
What would the funds be used for? (Please be specific)
Funds received would be used to support matching services for one match for a year. Your investment
would help us serve children / youth from high juvenile
