About this source

Preserved evidence: the complete 8-image Library of Congress manuscript sequence is held here as unmodified JPEG copies and a manuscript Image PDF. Crypt of Echoes holds digital reproductions, not the physical manuscripts. The four-page Text PDF is the LOC/Bassett edited excerpt, ending at "Tennessee conqueror". It omits the manuscript's final paragraph, signature, postscript and address material (scan images 6-8). It is NOT a complete manuscript transcription. Toulmin distinguishes some conjectures from what he regards as facts, but much of the account is secondhand. The archive does not independently corroborate the military numbers or allegations. Bassett's explanatory notes are retained, as are the edition's closing ellipses.
