Discussion Agenda Subject : 8.1 Request the Board rescind the jointly shared student attendance zone between Ruckel Middle School and Destin Middle School beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, presented by Melissa Thrush Meeting : Dec 9, 2013 - Regular Meeting Type : Action Fiscal Impact : Yes Recommended Action : Request the Board begin the process to amend Resolution 10-03 to delete the shared student attendance zone between Ruckel Middle School and Destin Middle School and to include that zoned area into the Ruckel Middle School attendance zone only. Public Content This dual transportation zone is provided to students living east of the Rocky Bayou Bridge in Niceville/Bluewater Bay to the Walton County line. As of the October FTE count, the OCSD is providing transportation for 39 students on two buses at an annual cost of approximately $1000/student. Please see attached document. The removal of this zone of choice will impact 20 of these 39 students as the other 19 will be attending high school in the fall. Removal of this zone of choice removes the requirement that the OCSD provide transportation for these students, it does not prevent any of the 20 students from continuing to attend Destin Middle School on an attendance waiver. This zone of choice was created during a period of low enrollment at Destin Middle School. Currently Destin Middle School has an enrollment over 650 students. Both Meigs and Pryor Middle Schools have lower enrollment. Cost avoidance from the removal of this zone of choice could be used toward the purchase of additional security cameras on buses or towards the purchase of a new standard bus that is more fuel efficient, air conditioned, and equipped with improved safety features such as seatbelts. We have not purchased a new standard bus since 2008. It is requested that the Board begin the process to amend Resolution 10-03 to delete the shared student attendance zone between Ruckel Middle School and Destin Middle School and to include that zoned area into the Ruckel Middle School attendance zone only.
