Meeting : Jun 18, 2015 - Workshop Meeting Type : Action (Consent) Budget Source : Fully funded by The Teachers of Critical Language Program Recommended Action : Motion to approve Chinese Exchange Teacher who is fully funded by the Teachers of Critical Language Program for the 2015-2016 school year at Wright Elementary School Public Content The positive cognitive and academic impact of foreign language instruction in grades k-12 is well supported by educational research. Brain research shows this instruction improves students’ executive control and their ability to focus and listen. Students who take foreign language demonstrate an increase in their confidence and ability to solve complex problems. Additional benefits of foreign language instruction include an increase in college acceptance rates and career marketability. We have an opportunity to apply to offer foreign language instruction in 2015-16 during students’ elective wheel through a teacher exchange program with the U S Department of State. This program offers an opportunity for schools to host an exchange teacher to instruct a critical language in grades K-12. The State Department assumes the cost for the teacher’s salary, insurance and living expenses. At Wright Elementary, we have elected to teach Chinese due to an identified need in government and business. We feel this exchange will also help our students develop cultural competence and enhance their appreciation of our culture and government. The benefits of early foreign language instruction will have a positive impact for our students’ academic success and their future. For additional questions please contact Dr. Anita Gail Choice at Wright Elementary School, 833-3580 or Ms. Marti Gardner, Elementary Director at 833-4208.
