(Creative Online Developmental Education) grant from the Boeing Company to help spark elementary-age students’ interest and knowledge in programming through hands-on manipulatives. Along with the Boeing Company grant, the Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation matched a portion of the grant in the amount of $20,000. The Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation, Inc. (OPSF) is a not-for-profit community- based public schools foundation. Kids’ C.O.D.E. initiative focuses on engaging students in programming in grades 3-5 and will give students the tools to learn coding through hands-on play. Using the littleBits® Coding Kit, students manipulate physical blocks for input, outputs, motors, and sensors. By completing educational games and STEM activities, students gain hands-on coding experience, creativity, and confidence. As the students' progress through the program and grade levels, the student will become better versed in coding in hopes of encouraging them to enroll in future CTE courses, where they can earn industry certifications. The littleBits® Coding Kits lend themselves to years of use and academic development. Kids’ C.O.D.E will engage students with coding at an earlier age and will provide OCSD students with more time to prepare for future success. This project is meeting the components of the FLDOE’s strategic plan which states students should gain “higher achievement with computer skills, critical thinking, data analysis, technical writing, problem solving, math/science concepts and collaborative learning while preparing them as a “HIGHLY” skilled workforce because not preparing our students with fluency in this language is leaving our students unprepared for the changing workforce. Public Content Approval is requested for Program #6, Task Order #2, District-Wide School Security Upgrade Project (Phase 3 - Final Phase). The Project description is as follows: District-Wide School Security Upgrade Project (Phase 3) - Pursuant to the District provided priority list, the TPM will inspect various schools across the district that are deemed "vulnerable" and in need of design or configuration changes to provide for a more secure, single point of entry for each campus. These designs, in conjunction with new fencing on the sites, will force all foot traffic to enter at a single controlled point, thereby increasing the security of the campus by limiting uncontrolled access. Depending on the current layout, location of the main office on the campus and construction materials used, the complexity of the redesign will differ from school to school. The approach is to assess each school individually with the understanding that no two solutions will likely be the same. These projects will completed using the same ballistic materials standardized in Phases 1a, 1b and Phase 2. Phase 3 will address all remaining campuses that have not been addressed in previous phases. School Safety - Campus Fencing: Work will entail designing and constructing campus fencing at all remaining District schools to compliment and bolster the effectiveness of creating a single point of entry. Fencing will be placed appropriately on sites to allow for visitor traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, to access newly created, monitored, secure single point of entry vestibules.
